Positive: We arrived early morning (05:00) on the 29th. My wife and I quickly showered off and collapsed onto the bed after the long sleepless journey from Tbilisi, Georgia to SSH, followed by an hour-long drive to Dahab. Around 07:00 I heard the shower running again and looked over, half-awake, to see in confusion that my wife was still in bed. "what the hell? Did someone break into our room JUST to use the shower? I considered breaking a chair leg then using it as a club to brain the invader, but decided against it - the noise would give away my supposed unconsciousness. So I opted for a fistful of egyptian pounds (the local currency) instead, figuring I could chuck the money in the air before slamming the person's head against the counter. As I tentatively approached the bathroom door and peered in, my eyes, still bloodshot from a 26hr sleepless period, widened in surprise. There was no one in the shower! The hot water line had burst and water was flying everywhere in the bathroom! I quickly flipped off the power to the heater then closed the valve for the water line. I thought to myself "I really should notify someone..." then opted to go back to sleep instead - what if they wanted us to vacate the room immediately? My wife was exhausted and so was I. Everything's off. It'll be fine. Around 11:00 I got up, got dressed, then made my way downstairs to talk to the day-manager. After letting him know everything, he apologized profusely and moved us to a nicer room away from the street (morning traffic and local culture dictates that everyone honk their horns at all times) and on the other side of the hotel, facing the sea. An upgrade. Free of charge! My wife was quite pleased with the new room and we indeed slept much better there than the previous. A hotel-owned bar and beachsite plays loud crowd-attracting music until 01:00. The distant sound of music acted as a form of white noise more than anything.
Negative: ...the breeze gentle and sometimes rough, but not altogether unkind. Breakfast runs from 07:00 - 10:30 and is a simple meal consisting of flatbread, eggs, veggies, falafel, some meat, and a yogurt with provided honey and/ or jam. It's both filling and free! No juice tho - oh and the water on-site (perhaps in the country itself) is STRICTLY non-potable. Plastic water bottled are for sale at a convenience store opposite the hotel. I didn't see any water points for filling up one's personal bottle. There's a Dive-Site (Poseidon Divers) located on hotel-grounds. They are USD and Euro only - NO CARDS! They also do bank transfer though it's a bit of a hassle. Diving in the area is great. Snorkeling as well. Lunch with the Bedouins was great. /end positive A word of caution about the kids: if you buy from one you'd better be ready to fend off the multitude that will follow. I've long hair and a little girl approached my wife and I while we enjoyed tea around the Lighthouse area (shops and diving, about 300m south of the hotel). She asked if I wanted to buy any hair braid-things. I said sure thing and she wove three colorful lengths into my hair. I bought a little necklace thing from her too to replace one my wife tore off my neck years ago (different story. wasn't a bad thing). The girl was elated and went on her way after. The next day though...those colorful braids were a BULLSEYE on my head. EVERY kid saw them and immediately recognized that I was someone who gave away money. I like to help kids. Had a rough childhood myself. If a kid wants to earn money, that's great. Beggars though...I cannot abide. Do something. EARN the money. Don't ask for handouts. It belittles you and places a stain on your soul that seldom washes away. Ah also - dog poop on poorly-lit walkways (outside of the hotel, of course). Watch your step.
Summary: A relaxing honeymoon at an easygoing hotel. Walking distance restaurants and great diving!
